The MBR intertemporal choice criterion and Rawls' just savings principle

چکیده
This paper provides general theorems about the control that maximizes the mixed Bentham-Rawls (MBR) criterion for intergenerational justice, which was introduced in Alvarez-Cuadrado and Long (2009). We establish su¢ cient concavity conditions for a candidate trajectory to be optimal and unique. We also show that the state variable is monotonic under rather weak conditions. And nally we prove that inequality among generations, captured by the gap between the poorest and the richest generations, is lower when optimization is performed under the MBR criterion rather than under the discounted utilitarian criterion. The two last properties are in line with some aspects of the rawlsian just savings principle. Keywords: intergenerational equity, just savings principle. JEL Classi cation: D63, H43, O21, Q20. A normative framework of justice in climate change
The more the various dimensions of climate change are just, the more an international agreement is in principle attainable. That is the reason why justice plays a major role in favouring collective action against global warming. In this article I spell out the dominant notions of justice and the consequent criteria of equity for the main domains of global warming negotiations, in order to ident...
متن کاملAnomalies in Intertemporal Choice: Evidence and an Interpretation
Research on decision making under uncertainty has been strongly influenced by the documentation of numerous expected utility (EU) anomalies-behaviors that violate the expected utility axioms. The relative lack of progress on the closely related topic of intertemporal choice is partly due to the absence of an analogous set of discounted utility (DU) anomalies. We enumerate a set of DU anomalies ...

متن کامل1 Justice Is Not Equality
This essay disputes G. A. Cohen’s claim that John Rawls’s argument for the difference principle involves an argument from moral arbitrariness to equality and then an illicit move away from equality. Moreover, the claim that an argument from moral arbitrariness establishes equality as the essential distributive justice ideal is found wanting. Rescuing Justice and Equality is an original, subtle,...
متن کاملPoverty and Economic Decision-Making: Evidence from Changes in Financial Resources at Payday.
We study the effect of financial resources on decision-making. Low-income U.S. households are randomly assigned to receive an online survey before or after payday. The survey collects measures of cognitive function and administers risk and intertemporal choice tasks. The study design generates variation in cash, checking and savings balances, and expenditures. Before-payday participants behave ...
